What do you need to look out for?

1.Ordering in good time
Because the stakes are salt-impregnated using the boiler pressure method, a so-called “fixing time” (which can amount to 6 weeks, according to the specific requirements of respective wood preservative manufacturers and also weather conditions) must be adhered to before installation, within which time the wood preservative components connect themselves firmly with the wood fibre. Otherwise the latter can be washed, with the consequence that the protective effect of the wood no longer functions.

Also with stakes impregnated with coal tar oil in the hot cold adjusting impregnation method a longer temporary storage affects itself positively with regard to its later service life.

2. See for yourself
It doesn’t matter whether the wood comes from pine or spruce - the stakes of both woods have the same described advantages. For the service life and consequently the economy of vines and fruit trees, the quality of the untreated wood and the impregnation are important. The latter is essentially determined by the radial urgency of the wood preservative into the wood body.
Before purchase make a sample section (never the top end - high penetration depths are always reached here!), or take a sample with you. Test the penetration depth, which should amount to several millimetres!

3. Quality purchase with the German Wood Preservation Association organisation of stake manufacturers
Those in the German Wood Preservation Association (Deutscher Holzschutzverband, or DHV), the manufactures of impregnated vine and fruit tree wooden stakes, arrange the necessary high quality technical equipment as well as outstanding trained experts and years of experience.
